Anniversary Fete.—This Day. A PUBLIC EXAMINATION of the ■*■"•*- children of the Baptist Chapel Sabbath School, Bridge-street, will be held this day FKI-DAY, December 27, on dv Practice Ground" of the Volunteers, in th<v Maiiaj Valley, should the weather prove favorable, (otherwise it will be he:d in the Chapel); the children wil! arrive on the ground at half-past Sieve;; o'clock. At the conclusion of the examination prizes will be distributed and the children will sit down to tea. Tea wil also be provided for parents and friends; tickets, adults, Is. 6d. ; -children, ls v may be had of the Misses Jay, or any ' of the teachers. On the following Sabbath two sermons will be preached at the Baptist Chapel, when collections wil1 be made in aid of the Sabbath School. To the Editor of the Nelson Examiner. SIR —There seems to be a fatality attending everything the Nelson Government attempts in this district. Without raking up the past, further than just to notice their action in the matter of the West Coast road, of itself sufficiently ridiculou> and annoying,! would now direct your attention to another affair, or job as it appears to me, which cause? a good deal of comment and indignation here at present. It appears that the Superintendent has given £20 to Mr. Hornby, a publican at Waslibourne's Flat, t" improve the crossing-place of a creek on the road to Slate River, which everyone, except Mr. Hornby and | his Honor, knows cannot be improved by any outlny ■ short of that necessary to erect a dvay bridge over it. It is not the egregriom absurdity .of the thin.-.: which has given offence, so much as the manner of doing it; and, as to any benefit arising from it, the inou •} might just as well have heen thrown in the sea, sinoc the first fresh will make short W'<;k of the low sticks Mr. Hornby has hail laid in ilu1 cre^k. Accustomed as we are here to vagaries in ro*u! making, and patiently as we have born* with them hitherto, this last pound, if if lias not broken our backs, has at least loosened our tongues. Is it not monstrous that public money should be given to an irresponsible person to be thus thrown away, while a bridge in thi.town is reported officially by the cl:icf constable " to be dangerous to life and property," and was i-een by the Provincial Engineer months ago much in the same state as it is now? but there was then "no more public money to be spent in Collingwood till the Ueiieral Government" had performed some miracle, I t'oig t whar. Contrast all this with the alacrity of the Council voting money for, and the Engineer reporting on the Wangapeka-road, or the desperate cn.'.rgy displayed in the mad attempt to connect the Wiiim.jas with the West Coast, via the Mountains of the Moon! 1 am, &c, OBSERVER. December 14,1861. To the Editor of the Nelson Examiner. SIR —From the letter signed " Observer, 1" you will perceive ho charges me " with receiving £20 from the Superintendent to improve the crossingpiace of a creek on the road to Slate Kiver; that the ford cannot be improved without erecting a d'rai bridge over it; as to any benefit arising from it, th< mone.y might, just as well have been thrown into the sea, since Lie hist fresh will make short work of the few sticks that have been had in the creek.' &c, &c. 1 now distinctly state, previous to the repairing of the ford, that any empty dray, or pack hu.lock, or m\ person on horseback, had great difficulty in crossing the »aid ford. But, since tlw ford was repaired, » loaded dray or bullock not only can but does cross with as much ease and safety as any ford across thrMrtitai in Nelson. And there have been not only onr but. three freshes (two heavy ones), and strange to say. the few sticks as " Observer " calls them, are still !.• tho same p!aee, hove never moved, but aie as firm as ever, and have po-itivaly diverted the stream to tlr other side of the creek. The total c(>Nt was not £20, but £15, and up the pre/ent time I have never reciived one shilling from the Superintendent.' In parsing I may observe there has been for some time « foot-bridge across the said creek. Whether llv money has been wasted or any improvement muU:, the public in general, but bullock-drivers in particular. are supposed to be the best judges. 15ut •• observer,"' l fear, is in error; it is quite possible he may mem, Doctoi's Creek, over which a dray bridge would be a very great boon, as it is decidedly the worst part ot the road; as for attempting to repair it, that would ceitainly be wasting money, time, &c. Hut, to conclude, Mr Observer may rake up whfll he likes about fatality, or the West Coast, road, or any other road ; he may be as indignant as he may think proper, or perform as many miracles as he may fimj ptofitable, and talk about the Mountains of the Moon, or any other moonshine, unil he is tired ; but is is to be hoped for the future, should anything happen (res' or imaginary) that may loosen or. set his tongue * wagging, thrtt he will try to teach the said tongue to speak the truth, &c, I am, &c, . - JOHN HORNBY. Slateford, December 16, ISGt. P.S.—I did not know of " Observer's " letter until the' 14th December instant, otherwise it would have been promptly answered. 618 J. H. Nelson Harmonic Society.
