CANTERBURY.
{From the Lyttelton Titos.)
Otf Tuesday, 3 d December, Mr, A. Anderaon t Qf Kaipoi, whilst bathing at the Salt-
vv.''t t O.'tH-k, was apparently seized with (*<anu> ami d row nod. It appears ilie dece.iawi < jnrered the water whilst in a violent sta'e of pers,<erarion. Although, the pool of water in which he bathed was* on!v six or eight yards across either way; yet from the depth being as much as eighteen feet in the centre, it wasthree hours before the body was recovered. The deceased.was accompanied by William Forbes and Walter Burrage, who rendered every assistance in their power. A little girl, six years old, of the name of Shentt was drowned in a water hole near the Wesleyan Chapel, on the Island, Kaiapoi, on November 23. An inquest was held on the body on the following Monday when a verdict of 'Accidental Death' was returned. , Moreton Bay Sheep.—The splendid clipper ship White Star, arrived in Lyttelton haibor at ah early hour yesterday morning. She is by far the largest ship that has ever entered this harbor, her measurement being 2340 tons. She brings 8500 aheep from Moreton Bay, and has had a successful passage, having lost only gome 300 on the voyage. As she lies off Golans Bay on the further side of the harbor, her vast proportions are not at once discernible from the shore. As a proof of her remarkable sailing povveis, it is stated that the time occupied in her voyages to Melbourne averages exactly 70 days. She is commanded by Capt. Kerr, a brother of the gentleman who commands the Mermaid.
Launch at Akaroa.—A fine clipper schooner was successfully launched on Monday last, from the yard of Messrs. Close, Carlisle and Read, Head of bay, Akaroa. Her dimensions are—length of keel, 72 feet; over all, 84 feet; breadth of beam, 17 feet; depth of hold, 7 feet 2 inches; builders' measaremeLt, 96 tons. The usual bottle of wine was broken and ' Success to the Nymph ot the Sea* was given and responded to by the numerous visitois present with hearty cheers. This is the largest vessel that has yet been built in Canterbury, and great credit is due to Messrs. Close and Co., for having in the face of many difficulties succeeded in bringing out a vessel that will stand comparison with anything of her size in the colony. Another schooner is now on the stocks at the yard of Messrs. Wilson, Barwick and Co., Red House Bay, Akaroa, and will be shortly ready for launching. . | We understand the schooner Flirt got on j a spit at the Kaiapoi bar, a total wreck. ilt is reported that the cargo is much | damaged. A man by the name of Hill, i went down on Saturday evening to see the wrack in a canoe; he shortly afterwards returned lor home, but has not yet been heud o{ '.—Canterbury Standard. j The port of Lyttelton .has received a va!uable accession to its list of vessels, in the shape of the screw steamer Maid of the Yarra, lately purchased by Captain Gay, on account of Messrs. Miles and Co. The Maid of the Yarra is a handsome iron boat, sof 142 tons tegister, and 14 horse power* The limited power of her engines brings her under the class of auxiliary screws, but her excellent sailing powers'more than compensate for this deficiency, as she is well known in the neighbouring colonies as a perfect clipper. She is to be laid on at once as a regular trader between Akaroa and Timaru, and her passenger accommodation is to be increased. She is commanded by Capt. Gay, late of the Corsair, and no commander be.ter known or more widely esteemed could have been chosen. The establishment of this steamer cannot fail to give an impetus to the trade of Akaroa and Timaru.
