S s many as five steamers were in our harbour yesterday:—The Airedale from Auckland, Lord Worsley from the South, Storm Bird and Tasmanian Maid from Ficton, and the Undine belonging to this port. Besides these the Cincinnati coal ship arrived from Newcastle, and the schooner Friends from Melbourne. We are indebted to the masters of the last two for files to the date of their departures. From the North we hear that the Governor, with Mr. Fox, is visiting the natives atjthe Bay of Islands, and that Mr. Williamson has been again returned for Superintendent, Auckland. At Taranaki the Provincial Council had passed resolutions on the following subjects:-— M The arbitrary way in which some men have been struck off and others liable and willing to serve refused pay and rations by the mlitia authorities." "To introduce a measure for the compulsory registration of all stock owned at the commencement of the war, of that acquired since, and what disposed of by owners;" and a communication with the General Government " as to the completion of the commission for the enquirvas to the losses sustained by the settlers during the war." Also a vote of thanks acknowledging the sum of appropriated by I the Government of Victoria, in aid of the Taranaki Relief Fund, The aspect of the native question is of a peaceful character. From Otago the news continues favorabfe, the gold by the last escort being nearly 20,000 ounces ; we give extracts from local papers on the subject. From Wanganui we hear of another unfortunate addition to the crime of murder in the case of colour-ser-geant Collins, who shot Ensign and Adjutant Wm. Alexander, of H.M. 65th Regiment, upon being reprimanded for a misconception cf orders. It is said that the perpetrator, in consequence of some pecuniary matters in connection with his position, as pay-sergeant, had resorted to hard drinking,

and was under its influence when the lamentable act was committed. From Australia we get papers to the 29th October, latest quotation of Adelaide flour being £9 ss. to £10 per ton. Wheat, 3s. lOd. per bushel. . t ,
