CANTERBURY.

(Frmji the Standard.)

SPORTING INTELLIGENCE. . At a public meeting held at the Market Hall, Christchurch, on Saturday the 15th inst. to consider the best means of obtaining a pack of hounds for this province, and of starting a hunting establishment, E. J. Wakefield in the Chair, the following resolution! were passed :—

That the establishment of a pack of hounds in the Canterbury province would afford a healthy, manly, and sociable recreation to both inhabitants and visitors, and tend to the encouragement of a powerful and valuable breed of horses. That inasmuch as the expenditure consequent on the pursuance of the above sports would tend to raise the market price of hay and oats, and well bied horses, for the production of which this province is especially adapted : the establishment of a pack of founds would be conductive to the agricultural interest. That a committee be appointed for the following purposes, viz.:— 1. To ascertain the amount of donations and yearly subscriptions that may be relied on for the above object. 2. To collect information as to the probable cost of forming and maintaining such a hunting establishment as would be suitable to the province. 3. To enquire as to the best means of obtaining hounds and deer or hares. 4. To learn how far facilities for running over their lands would be afforded by occupiers in the cultivated districts. 6. To report on these subjects, and any other matter relating to the above object to a meeting of subscribers, to be called by the Committee at an parly date. The following subscriptions have'already been advertised.

Oxford.—We are given to understand that several of the inhabitants of Oxford, with a tew of the runholders in the neighborhood, have formed a company for the pttipoeeoiobUttDiugftoiaJSD^laiMi* tra-

tion engine. We believe it is the intention ai the company to run the engine between the bush at Oxford and the north bank of the Waimakiriri, to supply Christchurch with firewood, sawn timber, &c.

The ship Glentai?ner, Captain Wilson, cast anchor in our harbor ori Satin day evenhig,Bth June, ]04d«ay8frorn^heDowns. The Glenianner will be recollected as a visitor to this port and a woolship hence three years ago, on which occasion she was tilted in Pigeon Bay with a new mainmast and other large spars. It is gratifying to leaui that alter-experience has proved these to be remarkably good sticks, and they still remain where they were placed. The Glentanner bring?, as an important part of her cargo for this port, 31 Spanish sheep consigned to Messrs, Miles and Co. for Mr. Geo. Rich, and 5 Hampshire Downs rams. The former consists of 10 pure Spanish merino ewes, and 10 others of the same blood crossed with one-third French; these 20 ewes have II lambs, which complete the number. Five lambs were lost on the way out; ihe remainder are in as good condition as when put on board. These fine sheep are from Mr. Rich's English Bocks, and, like all that gentleman's importations, are quite a spectacle for a connoisseur in sheep.
