Correspondence.

To the Editor of the Colonist.

Sir—May Ibe permitted to address, through, your columns, a few words to the electors and other in-' habitants of Nelson and the Waimeas. ' >

One. of the most important subjects under the ' consideration of the Provincial Council this session is the erection of a cavt-bridge across the Wairoa river; the highest estimated cost, and one which is likely to be adopted by the Provincial Council 'is £9000, proposed to be borrowed, and to be paid off by a sinking fund and to extend over twenty ; years; the construction of the bridge to be of Ikon. iTo all this the electors generally, I think, would not have the slightest objection, if it-werenot for •the delay that would necessarily occur in procuring Uhe iron; from England, and its erection after it •arrives here.

; 'I should like: to see the {Council pause, before jthey adopt this course, and for once on such an ■important subject" consult the electors, "especially ;as two courses are open to the public—either to have a wooden bridge, which could be erected at' once and without sending the money, out of the country—a most important consideration: this; bridge, in all probability, could be finished within six months, and at one-third of the cost of an ironr bridge. The other course is to have the iron bridge, which would be perhaps two years before it is finished.

The opening up of the Wangapeka gold-fields makes it highly desirable that the most expeditious means should be adopted of getting a cart bridge over the river.

I am, &c, AN ELECTOR.
