CANTERBURY RACES.

From the South the racing at Canterbury is the chief item, Nelson horses having apparently had it all'their own way. Mr. Stafford's bra Ultima winning the Trial Stakes and the Challenge Cup, walking over for the Criterion Stakes, and coming in second "to Mr. Redwood's bra Wetsail for the Ladies Purse, and M. Minchin's b m Cassandra for the Metropolitan Plate (handicap), thej weights being for the race.—Cassandra, 5 yrs, 7st. 121b. Ultima, 5 yrs., l'Ost. 71b.; Rob Roy, 5 yrs., Sat. 71b.; Kitty, 7st., and Otto, 9st.- . Mr Redwood's Wetsail walked over for the Canterbury Cup and Queen's' Plate, coming in first in the Forced Handicap Sweepstakes, against Ultima, Antidote, and Rob Roy. Some complaints were made about the handicapping and starting, and a long letter in the Canterbury Standard^ signed " Philhippos," ensued. This was replied to in the Lyttelton limes by Mr. White, one of the starters; and a reference to the subject appears in the report of .that paper, characterising the grumbling as "as absurd as out of place," and invites Nelson owners-to try. again next year for the prizes, which,; when,fairly won, -they-will 'still be welcome to until a hearer equality of horses is arrived at
