FLIGHT OF THE KING OF NAPLES.
Before quitting Naples, the king issued proclamations, full of praise of himself and his ancestors, and of affectionate words to his 'dearly beloved people'—he had ' not entertained a single thought that was not devoted to the happiness and good of our subjects. The institutions which we have irrevocably guaranteed thera are the proofs of this.* He also issued a protest, reserving all his rights, and denouncing ihe reckless adventurer,' who has so unceremoniously made war upon him. The king had formed the plan of handing over to Austria, the Neapolitan fleet; but this monstrous proposal was resisted by his ministers. When Garibaldi came, he gave the fleet to Persano, the Sardinian admiral, who has sailed with it to Ancona. It is reported that the last act of treachery perpetrated by taie young king, when he found that Austria would not interfere to assist him, was to ofjfer to help Garibaldi (if the latter would leavehim in possession of his throne), against VenetiaT In return for this the Austrian steamers which had for some time waited1 at Naples to rescue the person of his majesty,, in case of danger, were* lately or^ed, ba,c!& to Trieste
