RUSSIA AND TURKEY.
The Eastern question, a revival of which at the time of outlast publication seemed to be announced by some ominous symptons, has subsided—for the present. The Western powers, would not agree to the Russian announcement that the state of the Christian provinces was " intolerable," nor that the foreign consuls should act as a roving commission of inquiry to rake up grievances. How would Russia, it was argued, like a body of Turks and Circassians perambulattng the country on a similar mission? Nor would the Western Powers countenance for one moment the proposal for a new organisation of the Christian provinces to be effected by external agency. Russia was checked; and the Grand Turk undertook to institute an inquiry of his own free will. The Commissioners are already in the provinces.
, Russia proceeds in her great enterprise of serf-emancipation. The Emperor Alexander has worked so well that whereas the period fixed fpr the abolition of serfdom was 12 years, if we may believe Le Nord, the task will be completed in two, and on reasonable terms. '•'■■•'■
