CANTERBURY.

(From the LyHelton Times.)

Ball at Kaiapoi.—The Kaiapoi Volunteer Rifle Ball, held at Mr. W. White's Kaikainui hotel, in aid of the Taranaki Relief Fund, was most successful in every way : affording a most delightful evening to the volunteers aad their friends, as .well as some monetary assistauce to the sufferers. In the decorations of the room, the music of the Christchurch Band, and the liberal supplies of the caterer, the ball-room habitue found all that be could possibly desire. Dancing was kept up with grace, vigour, and animation till past 5 o'clock in the morning; and even. then good friends were much more loth to shake hands than usual. The uniform of the corps shewed well iv contrast to the more fanciful decorations of the room, and aerial drapery of their partners. After supper ths usual toasts were druuk with all the musical honors; none, perhaps, was given with more genuine warmth and kindly feeling thau that of Mr. White, the host, unless we except that of Mrs. White, his most able helpmate iv all tlie arrangements. It is by his generosity in giving the supper and the room, while the stewards liberally supplied the miuuliae, that the whole proceeds are devoted to the Kielief Fund. We sincerely congratulate the volunteers and people of Kaiapoi on the event. We hear from Timaru of two more fatal accidents ,in the South Country. One of the Deal boatmen engaged in working the cargo boats on the beach was drowned when landing, on the 3rd inst., only, one other man being with him af the time. The next day another man was drowned at Aarowenua, working the ferry boat across the river; it appears that the rope broke and threw him overboard. The Resident Magistrate, Mr. Woolluombe, held an iuquest in each case, as prescribed by law, at which verdicts in accordance with the respective facts were returned. Our information does not supply the names of the deceased, or any further particulars.
