TURAKINA.
-An inquest was held on Friday, the 29th hist., before S. M. Curl, Esq., .Coroner for the .District,-at the house of Mr. Johu Cameron, outhe body of Charles. Peck, who was found on Thursday morniog -last on the bank of the Makiri stream. It was supposed that the deceased in attempting to cross the stream, on the uight of the previous Tuesday, was owing to the heavy fresh, washed away. A verdict of "accidentally drowned "was returned. The jury, also recommended that the streams in theTurakin'a and Raugitikei districts should be bridged, several cases having come before their notice of persons having nearly lost their lives during the heavy freshets. The Coroner very appropriately represented to the jury the necessity of applying for the appointment of a police officer in the district, as in cases of the above kind,, there would then be one whose duty it would be take charge of the body, apprise the coroner of the occurrence, &c.; whereas, without the presence of such officer no settler would willingly take on himself the onu3 of the necessary duty. The jurors entirely concurred iv the Coroner's suggestion.— Wanganui Chronicle.
