Correspondence.
To the Editor of the Golonist. Sir, —'Some three months ago, a proposition was brought forward in the Provincial Council, and, 1 believe, unanimously cavried—namely, to enlarge the yard connected with the jail, particularly that portion where debtors are confined, and to make some other alterations much required in the prison generally, such as ventilation. - ,; Now, Sir, if such a motion was brought forward and carried, which, I think, few will deny, canyon, or any of your readers inform me why it is that there is up to this time no signs of these much needed alterations or improvements being proceeded with ? Is it to be accounted for by the usual dilatoriness which generally characterises all the proceedings of our Extcutive Government, or are the powers that he loath to make a breach into the garden appropriated to the use of our worthy Gaoler? Surely neither of these reasons are sufficient for delaying expending money voted by the Council, for useful and much wanted public works. But perhaps the hon. members who proposed and seconded the motion, already alluded to, will see that their time is not wasted nor spent in vain, but will urge this matter at the proper quarters. ' I am, &c, NEMO. Nelson, 11th July, 1860.
