THE VOLUNTEERS

A meeting of the City Company of Volunteers took place Jn the Long Room of the Commercial Hotel, on Monday, the 30th April, to determine upon the imi'orni of the company. After much discussion it was determined that French grey with red facing should be adopted, and that Mr. Everett be invited to act as deputy at the meeting about to take place on Thursday, 3rd May, to ascertain whether the district companies were willing to adopt the same uniform or select a separate dress for themselves. Since our Adjutant has been appointed, his time has been fully occupied in visiting the neighboring districts, and with tbo exception of the Waimea Snub, Company, allhave been duly sworn iv. We understand that a re-election of officers is likely soon to take place for that Comiany.

The drill of No. 1 Company under the Adjutant and Sergeant-major, are progressing most favorably.

No. 2 City .Company is, we believe, now under formation,

No. 4, or Wakapuaka Company, meet twice a week for drill, uuder Mr. Slater, and are favorably spoken of.

A great difficulty exists in the other districts as regards drill Sergeants, a very prevalent feeling seems to exist in the Waimea districts, that Government should supply a Sergeant to each district, free of expense. In Auckland we believe the Adjutant and Staff Major superintends the drill of all the Companies, but in a province so scattered as that of Nelson, it would be impossible, however willing for them to do so. It is therefore to be hoped that Government will assist us in this measure, without which we fear the companies of ths outlaying districts will not be in so efficient a state as might be desired.
