WELLINGTON.

By our files of Wellington papers, we perceive that steps have been taken by Mr. King, on behalf of Mr. Baker, which have led to the quashing of the conviction as obtained by Mr. Schroder, our fellow-colonist, against that gentleman. There appears to have been a large amount of political and party feeling mixed up in the matter. The reports are too long for us to publish entire, and we will therefore briefly say that the grounds on which Mr. Kins: has succeeded are by proving that one of the Magistrates on the Bench exercised an undue amount of influence by making it a matter in which he personally and privately advised and conferred with the witnesses. We hope that in some neutral spot the matter will be thoroughly investigated. That there were ample grounds of suspicion, -.the conviction obtained proves; and now, without a word upon the evidence adduced, will patiently await the result of a less prejudiced assembly. We insert the following item from thfe Independent of October 13th :—We are informed that a communication has been received from Bishop Selwyn, per White Swan, suspending Mr. Baker from" all clerical duties, and appointing the Rev. A. Stock, Surrogate and Commissary in his stead. The Managing Committee of the Wellington Steam Navigation Company have published their second report, and it seems to be a very favorable one. They are enabled to declare a dividend of 10 per cent, on the paid up capital, and they have in hand surplus capital, and a large sum for net profits. The important matter of coals has also received due attention, and we find thatihe same incorrect certificate of the Engineer of the White Swan is published. We hope that by this time his answer to our observations will have been equally made public. The Captain of the Oliver Lang appeared as a defendant in an action brought against him by the Surgeon of the ship, for the recovery of a sum of money paid by him to a passenger who had been very efficient as a nurse during the passage out. It appeared that the surgeon was fully justified in employing a nurse, and the Captain had'therefore to pay the debt with costs. -
