We have San Francisco news to the 18th April. ■

A report was current in San Francisco that the United States troops had been defeated by the Mormons.

The mining news was encouraging. 'Rich diggings were being discovered in various parts of the country. . ■

The Sacramento Bee contains the following extraot from a letter dated Salt Lake, February 6th:— .

"We get along quite well, having plenty to eat but very little to wear, clothing being very scarce, as no goods have been brought in herei this year, and you cannot buy a yard of goods of any kind, which is possibly done to force us into manufacturing. •» * • "\y e h ave 1000 mounted troops, well, armed, who are in the mountain ranges, watching the enemy: and our intention 13 to enjoy freedom at any coat. As a last resort, if we are overpowered, we shall burn everything and cross the mountains, where we shall be unmolested; but we never intend to be conquered."
