Borough declines to buy $2000 Taupo painting
The council has declined with regret an offer by an Auckland man, Mr J. D. Macnaughtan, to sell to the borough a J. C. Hoyte painting, "Governor Grey's Residence — Lake Taupo." Mr Macnaughtan wanted $2000 for the painting and told the council he would like to see it housed permanently in Taupo. According to staff at the Auckland Art Gallery, J. C. Hoyte is highly regarded as an a'rtist, although the painting is not one of his best works. * * * A further stage in a multi-stage subdivision at Nukuhau is to go ahead. The proposal called for subdividing off one allotment of 11 allotments available between Woodward Street and Norman Smith Street. The council considered that piecemeal subdivision of the block should not be encouraged, and it laid down several conditions to the scheme plan requiring upgrading of the area. * * * A 21-acre block at Centennial Park has been let to Mr J. C. Hall for three years at $100 a year. Mr Hall has previously leased the area for grazing on a year-to-year basis. The council decided in April that any of its reserves which were to be
leased on a short-term basis should be let by tender. Mr Hall's tender was one of three received. * * * The Taupo Croquet Club is to get a site for a croquet lawn in the borough* Mr Kiddle has been asked to report to the council on suitable small sites which could be made available. There are almost 30 members of the croquet club and many more are expected to join when there is land available for a lawn. * * * A display of vintage and modern cars will be held at the western end of Story Place parking area on October 19. The display will be put on by the New Zealand Rolls Royce and Bentley Car Club. Council gave its permission for the area to be used to display about 30 cars. * * * Taupo exceeded its electricity supply target two weeks out of four last month, the electrical engineer, Mr K. G. Stewart
told the Taupo Borough Council last week. Warm weather enabled Taupo to meet its fortnightly cumulative targets without resorting to total cuts, he said. * * * ( t "Satisfactory progress" was being made with the tree-cutting . programme, Mr Stewart said. Eight Taupo streets had trees trimmed or felled clear of over-head lines. * * ♦ A trairiing course for ten members of the Taupo M.E.D. staff is being held to prepare line and fitter trainees for limited registration examinations. The course consists of evening lectures and practical sessions.
