Faster than mail, anyway
Papua-New Guinea's location in what is sometime described as New Zealand's "near north" is not borne out by mail services — a letter to the Taupo Times took almost three months to reach its destination last Friday. The letter, dated April 23, was written by former Taupo electrical contractor Mr C. M. C. ["Olly"] Twist. Now acting branch manager at Port Moresby of a major trading company, Mr Twist was transferred on promotion from Lae, where he had lived since his departure from Taupo. Despite their reluctance to leave Lae, Mr Twist said his family was looking forward to the bigger variety of entertainment and night activity offered in Port Moresby, including the territory's only drive-in movie. The family was also looking forward to the territory's independence celebrations, to be held in Port Moresby on December 1. On a holiday visit to Taupo earlier this year, Mr Twist jocularly claimed that when he became inadvertently involved in a native uprising, he could run fastet than the arrows used in the affray. His latest advice: "I am keeping up my running training to keep ahead of those arrows."
