Safety record

Tough-looking bunch? One can say that again. They're the night-shift at Fletcher's Taupo sawmill, and they've just knocked two sawmill records stone cold. The shift has worked more than 55,000 manhours this year between 6.30 p.m. and 3.30 a.m. every night, five nights a week, without a single accident involving lost time.

And just to show that playing it safe doesn't mean sacrificing output, last month the 150 men of the day and night shifts at the mill together set a new Fletcher record of 200,000 feet of sawn timber for the building industry every 24 hours, for five days a week, through the whole of June — and all without a single accident.
