Youth pleads guilty to car charges
A Rotorua youth who stole two cars after running away from home last week appeared before Mr P. J. Trapski, S.M., in the Taupo Children's Court on Thursday. The boy, a 15-year-old student, pleaded guilty to charges of unlawfully taking a 1971 Holden utility worth $2500 from Rotorua on July 16 and an older model of the same vehicle, valued at $675, from Turangi the following day. He also admitted a charge of dangerous driving on State highway 5 at Taupo on July 17. He was remanded in Social Welfare cUstody to appear in the Rotorua Children's Court today.
Senior-Sergeant R. Moncur told the Taupo court that the youth was stopped by Taupo police north of the town on Wednesday night, after a chase at speeds up to 80 m.p.h. He had twice caused oncoming traffic to swerve to avoid a collision. The boy evenfually abandoned the car he had taken from a Turangi driveway and ran off into some trees on the Taupo-Rotorua road. He told police he had run away from home and driven to Turangi in a vehicle he took from Rotorua. He had taken the second vehicle because he wanted to go back to Rotorua to get something to eat.
