National begs to differ...
The most charitable interpretation that could be put on Mr Ridley's statement on drought relief [Taupo Times, July 4] was that he did not know what has been done in the past, and did not take the trouble to find out before he went into print", said *Mr D. J. Carter, agriculture spokesman for the National Party. Flood and drought relief measures were introduced by the National Government in the mid- 1950s and had been amended from time to time to meet varying circumstances, he said. They included cartage on fodder for stock; cartage ron livestock sent out to
other areas where feed was available (on some occasions up to 300 miles); re-grassing subsidies for pastures on some occasions; guaranteed bank loans; firrancial assistance through State Advances and the lucerne establishment grant in the Taupo area following drought and an invasion of pasture pests. These measures have been altered from time to time and this year were added to following representations from Federated Farmers. "To say that nothing was done by the National Government to alleviate these problems is neither credible or correct," said Mr Carter.
