MATERIALS DEMAND TO BE RELIEVED

A standard particle board machine is to be commissioned in Taupo later this year by Fletcher Timber, in a bid to relieve the demand for building materials.

The company's 1974 annual report, released yesterday, states there has been an unprecedented demand for particle board and most building materials. "Imports have given some relief and the machine being commissioned in October should ease the position," said the report. The existing particle board plants at Taupo and Christchurch have been operating at full capacity. The Bison-Mende plant at Taupo was commissioned on schedule in 1973 and achieved full production

after some minor start-up problems. Trial consignments of bison board have already been shipped to Japan where they have been wellreceived. Prospects for long-term substantial exports are good, said the report. The Taupo sawmill — the fourth largest producer in New Zealand — operated at a high level of efficiency during the year. Production and grade recovery were maintained despite staff shortages. Processing and distribution of this and other North Island production was aimed at the local market and exports of timber were sharply reduced.
