Times wins 2 major awards
The Taupo Times has won the journalism and news photography awards in the New Zealand Community Newspapers' Association better newspapers competition. The plaques were presented to the editor, Mr M.. A. Fletcher, at the association's 16th annual conference at Hamilton at the weekend. The Times was also placed second in the best all-round newspaper section and third.for display advertising. The awards were judged by the managing editor of the Hawke's Bay Herald Tribune, Mr E. G. Webber. On the F. G. Snedden journalism award, Mr Webber said: "I placed the Taupo Times first, not only for a generally good and consistent standard but because this was backed up by such good journalistic features
as the death of the Rogue Bore and the historical feature on the Opepe Engagement. "The Rogue Bore piece, in particular, supported as it was by effective photographs and well displayed overall, was a particularly good piece of illustrated journalism." On the Eric Berry award for photography, Mr Webber said: "The overall photographic coverage of the Taupo Times, including news, sport and social events was excellently recorded, thoughtfully cropped and technically of a high standard. The Carmichael award for the best all-round newspaper was won by the South Waikato News. Independent Newspaper group publications scooped the pool in this section. The Taumarunui Gazette was placed third. -
