Protect bush call

Deerstalkers want the headwaters of the Waihaha River left in native bush. They f'ear that proposals to place the land under afforestation would affect the ecologieal balance of the area. The national executive of the New Zealand Deerstalkers' Association is to

make top-level representation to the Government to have the land left in its natural state. This action was decided upon at the deerstalkers' national conference following a remit from the Mangakino branch. The reniit was supported by the Taupo deerstalkers. Taupo branch president Mr Keith Draper said yesterday the Hauhungaroa

Range contained the last major stand of potokarps left in the western Taupo basin. "There has been serious erosion in the western bays as a result of land clearance for farms," said Mr Draper. "The Waihaha River is the only one in the bays not seriously affected by ■the silt from erosion."
