Hockey: Taupo loses cup win chance

By losing 5-0 to Rotorua Saints last Saturday, the Taupo men's hockey team has thrown away all chances of being on top in the Airest Cup competition. It was one of the hardest games Taupo has played. The team's biggest fault was position play, and in not marking the opposition. Tackling from the backline was not up t.o the strong aggressive Saints' forwards. For the first 15 minutes,, play was even.

Two chances of goals by Taupo were squashed by the referee for dangerous stick play. Saints went in twice before half-time. Taupo College student, B. Read, played a sound game in marking his opponents. The forwards had a hard day. Often, small movements by T. Dowman and R Nathoo were cut off. Of the backs, D. Alexander played a good game by cutting the ball off and passing instantly to the forwards.

More goals from Saints came through Taupo players failing to tackle and not marking their men. Taupo will play the Rotorua High School side at Rotorua on Saturday. The team is: — P. Freer, D. Jeffares, J. Smith, R. Nathoo, S. Quinlan, K. McMahon, J. Williamson, B. Read, N. Bowen, D. Alexander, T. Dowman. Players are asked to meet at the Kaimanawa Reserve at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
