Dual marking for speed signs
Road speed signs will be marked with the letters "km/h" for 12 months after the changeover to metric speed limits in April 1975, the National Roads Board has decided. It is hoped this measure will avoid confusion in the months immediately after the conversion to metric
limits. In the long term, the current form of speed restriction sign will be used with the numerals indicating the appropriate speed limit in kilometres an hour. A number of ways for achieving the conversion were investigated. The board will use
panels of pressure sensitive overlay. The lettering "km/h" will be placed below the speed numerals and will intrude into the red border of the sign. A preliminary survey shows about 5000 speed limit signs are erected on the State highway system alone.
