Maoris to defend cup for second time

The Taupo Maori representative team will defend the Ted Murray Cup for the second time this year when it meets South Waikato Maoris in Taupo on Sunday. The last challenge — by Tongariro — was fairly strong and it was not until the final quarter that Taupo was able to put the issue beyond doubt. The South Waikato Cup bid will be more formidable still from all accounts. The side has shown strong form this season. There will also be a curtain-raiser between two under-21 teams from South Waikato and Taupo. This game is scheduled to begin at 1.30 p.m. The senior fixture is set for 3 p.m. To top the day off there will be two hangis — one at about mid-day and the other after the final game.
