Taupo team wins debate

The Taupo Toastmistress team won the second round of the Waikato debating contest held in Taupo last week. The team — Joan Williamson (leader), Gretchen Kivell and Isa Gaffney — debated against their Tokoroa counterparts on "The Farmer is the Most Pampered Person in New Zealand." Taupo argued the affirmative. A club spokesman said the emotional subject caused many interjections which led to a 'pretty lively' debate. Ajudicators for the evening were Mr Roger Greenwell, of Taupo, Shirley Keesing, of Tokoroa, and Helen Faville, of Taupo. The win was a majority decision in Taupo's favour. Gretchen Kivell was judged the best speaker of the debate. The Taupo team is to meet the Rotorua Toastmasters next week on the subject: "That Mankind is in Danger of Extinction." Taupo will argue in the negative.
