Gorgeous Gary made a valiant bid to make up distance with a splendid display of shal-low-water running. But he wasn't quite good enough — another five miles and he just might have reduced the lead. But Fearless Fred and Courageous Carol, representing the fire brigade, . deserved their win. And there is no truth whatsoever in the rumour that the pair trained by showering under the fire hoses — on Kaimanawa Reserve. Trier of the day award should, perhaps, go to Tonsils Thompson. He came in last. Must have sapped his strength with his vocal build-ups last week. The vote for sneaky play must undoubtedly . go to Morgan Thomas. Such was his heartrending display of being in difficulties in the shallows that a brave lass dressed in St John uniform did her rescue bit. . . only to be picked up by a cunning Morgan and carried from the water over his shoulder. Seems one cannot trust a chap dressed in a woman's bathing costume these days.
