Hospitality extended at meeting
The warm and friendly hospitality extended by members of the Whakamaru branch of Women's Division of Federated Farmers, with an interesting and varied display of handcraft entries and winter blooms, set the scene for a busy June meeting of the Waikato East Provincial W.D.F.F. held in the Settlers' Hall. Conference business and remit discussion accounted for much of the meeting, but sick, bereaved and less fortunate members were not forgotten. All were interested to learn that Mrs R. Sadler, a recent past president of Waikato East Provincial, is president of the branch at Otumoetai where she now resides as well as having been elected Tauranga vice- president. Reports revealed that a number of new members had been welcomed as well as valued members farewelled, and that all branches are participating actively in organisation programmes for the year. The golden jubilee conference to be held in Wellington next year and the ever-increasing expense involved are the two factors responsible for a "smaller than usual" contingent of delegates to attend the Dominion conference in Nelson later this month. Mrs J. W. Sanders, of Tokoroa, housekeeping secretary, reported that positions had been filled by the division housekeeper. An offer had been received from an interested person to undertake housekeeping work within the emergency housekeeping - scheme should her services be required. Mrs J. W. Powell, coordinating reporter, outlined the programme that has been arranged for the ensuing year. Particular mention was made of the second residential school to be held at the "Narrows" Park, Hamilton, early in Augusi Applications close
on July 15. To arrange a programme for the year from suggestions brought forward by branches, a meeting of the executive has been arranged for early in July. It is to be held at the president's house at Lichfield.. Branches were reminded that this is the year for "the special efforf ' for boosting provincial funds. The Oruanui branch is to host the August meeting. Prizes were awarded to the area winners of the two classes for hand-knitted articles in the Dominion knitting competition, the winning articles having now been forwarded to headquarters for inclusion in the national judging. Mrs C. V. Philpott, Tirohanga, was awarded first and second for her entries in the class for a child's jersey, and Mrs P. Mann, of Whakamaru, first for her knitted bag. A most unusual and much admired floral spray with a wooden platter and gift arrangement of fruit were presented to the retiring secretary, Mrs M. Fitzgerald, of Putaruru, by Mrs Scarlett.
