Local man new board head
A Wairakei farmer has been elected chairman of the RotoruaTaupo Pest Destruction Board. Mr K. C. McBeth, formerly chairman of the Taupo board, was elected at a meeting of members from Taupo, Tokoroa, Kaharoa, Ngakura and Reporoa. The board's area covers 1.75 million acres. . ( Mr McBeth said that although there will always be a potential rabbit problem on light pumice soils, he was more eoncerned with the . ;
opossum problem. "We are hoping to head off bovine Tb in opossums which was such a problem on the West Coast," he said. On the topic of poison-laying, Mr McBeth said the board was conscious of its name but was eoncerned with conservation. "Poison is not laid without its being merited and it is done only when it is economical or more suitable to do so," he said. "Most of our work is with dogs and gassing at the moment."
