RESCUE BID: MAN BURNT

A Taupo shepherd suffered first and second degree burns to his iegs and hands last week when he fell into a hot thermal stream while attempting to rescue a sheep which was being worried by dogs. Mr Bob Whiteside, of the Lands and Survey Rotokawa block, was travelling home when he saw three stray dogs set upon the sheep near the A.C. Baths. The frightened animal fell into the steaming stream and s'ned its fleece almost instantly. Mr Whiteside went to pull the sheep to safety when the bank gave way under him and he fell into the water. The sheep died shortly after and Mr Whiteside was treated by a local doctor for burns. The Taupo Borough Council has been concerned about the dog problem for some time. At the moment, changes in the borough dog legislation are being considered. Mr Whiteside was in a satisfactory condition yesterday.
