Take note Tonsils, we are in training

Taupo's fool-hardy are to break the ice, so to speak, and take a frosty dip in the lake on Saturday. And the Taupo Times is again among the front-runners [swimmers] with two formidable entrants. Those punters with a penchant for a "sure thing" should put their money on Luscious Lyndall and Gorgeous Gary. Luscious Lyndall, who has skied in the Australian AIps, is rumoured to be training for a skistreak down Ruapehu — provided there is enough snow — in preparation for Saturday's dip. Gorgeous Gary is a regular Waitahanui fisherman. And it is understood he has been wading in the raw to condition his body, presumably, for the big day. We've got a formidable combihation, all right. It is rumoured that the "mouthpieces" on the hill [the NZBC for discerning, non-radio folk] have plucked up the courage, and the people, to enter the dip. But against the Taupo Times team, the old steam radio is in for a dousing — and a

blown valve or two. Tonsils Thompson has decided to go in and, we hope, under. Because of the lack of females on the station, Ian is taking his greatnatured but long-suffer-ing wife Edith along for the plunge. More seriously, the NZBC and joint organisers Farmers expect a good number of teams to enter the dip. "Last year we had 36 teams entered. But because this year's is on a Saturday we will possibly have more," said Mr Thompson. Although the water level is fairly low the venue will remain the same as last year's — in front of the Lake Front Garage. This year, however, the sponsors are insisting that each team be made up of one male and one female. No dressing up, men. The course will be *T' shaped. Along the beach, down to the water, out to a buoy and back to land, then along the beach to one's partner. The second wave will follow the same course , but then run to the finish-line. The starting time will be 12.15 p.m. 1
