TRAINING SCHOOL OPENED
A training school for senior trafflc offlcers from throughout New Zealand opened in Turangi last week. The school has been established in the Ministry of Works and Development residency. It is staffed by Senior Traffic Officer E. Marwick and Sergeant T. Pyper, of Trentham. "We are taking the overflow from the Trentham training school and will also be running some specialised courses," said Mr Pyper. Last week, 24 sergeants were in training. They are to be replaced this week by a class of 23. Another sergeants' course is scheduled foi November, with training for senior traffic officers in between. Mr Pyper said it was not yet known how long the training school would be based at Turangi, but it could run into next year. Turangi was chosen because the facilities were available and because Trentham could no longer cope with all traffic officer training. Trainess are accommodated in the M.W.D. staff hostel at Turangi, "The school has started off extremely well, and everyone is really taken with Turangi and its facilities," Mr Pyper said. A special afternoon tea was held last week to officially open the training school, and Turangi dignitaries were invited. Also present were Ministry of Transport officials, including the Superintendent of Training, Mr E. Fowke, of Wellington; the Chief Traffic Officer, Mr H. B. Gore, of Trentham; the Hamilton district commander, Superintendent R. Evered; and Rotorua' s Senior Chief Traffic Officer, Mr C. Butterfield.
