East v west conflict seen over lake
An "east versus west" conflict appears to be developing over the respective local authorities' plans for the lakeshore, says the president of the Lake Taupo Development and Protection Society, Mr P. M. Wilson. "As a society we are anxious to see an effective,
unified. control of the lake, its environs and its catchment area." Mr Wilson made these comments in reference to an article published in the Taupo Times earlier this week on, the proposed residential development at Kuratau, and to a letter from the Taumarunui county clerk to the paper setting out the county's three areas of possible development on the lakeshore. The county clerk said only three areas had been earmarked for these purposes - which was less than developments planned for the eastern side of the lake. He said the council was not att^mpting to foster
wholesale development on the lakefront. "We sympathise with Mr Hindmarsh's plea for a cohesive plan for the Kuratau area, but the society must reserve its judgment on his ideas until it has seen the plans and studied the area," said Mr Wilson. "The society is pleased to note that the Taumarunui County Council has deleted residential zonings on the lakeshore at Waihora, Waihaha (subject to appeal), Te Papa, Te Hapua and Poukura." The residential A zoning only applies to three' areas — Waihi Village, Pukawa-Omori-Kuratau and Whareroa — but all of these are subject to appeal.
