Mail service move at Acacia Bay

Acacia Bay residents may soon get a house-to-house mail delivery — and this, in turn, will relieve the chronic shortage of private boxes at the Taupo post office. At present, some Acacia Bay people have their mail delivered to the Post Office counter because they cannot get a private box. The Acacia Bay Ratepayers' Progressive Association has already made strong representations to the Post Office to upgrade mail services and meet the Taupo postmaster, Mr J. Farrell, to present their case. "The Post Office agreed to have a serious look at a mail delivery for Acacia Bay if we could get 150 permanent residents in favour of it," said the association's secretary, Mr D. P. Locke. "We have gathered 150 . signatures and will be presenting the results of our survey to the postmaster. We will the'n be waiting for a decision from Wellington. I "They have not actually promised us a delivery, but there is every indication they will look on it as a necessity and give it their blessing." Mr Locke said there were not 150 permanent residents in their own homes at Acacia Bay, but the association had the signatures of 82 permanent residents, plus 24 living in permanently occupied flats, 12 renting houses, and 33 owners of holiday homes who occupied their places for extended periods (30 to 50 per cent of the year). "We have not included 4 places such as Acacia Bay Lodge, where there are eight accommodation units with an 80 per cent occupancy rate," said Mr Locke. "And there are a lot of holiday people over and

above the 150 who signed the petition, who would make use of a mail delivery service." He described the present mail service as chaotic during holiday times. People had to go into Taupo to collect mail from the Post Office counter because there were no private boxes available for rental. "Of all the people we questioned in our survey, only one turned us down flat. We are fairly hopeful that the outcome will be a house delivery for . Acacia Bay residents," said Mr Locke.
