Club seeks public funds 'reluctantly'
The Taupo Senior Citizens' Association is appealing for voluntary public donations to raise $2000 for its new clubrooms. "We do this reluctantly," said association president Mr W. S. Hasler yesterday. "The club is to apply for a $50,000 grant from the Kiwi lottery funds but before this can be received the association has to raise $17,000. "The application must leave Taupo by June 2.0 to be included in the distribution of funds but by this time we will be $2000 short of our required target. "We are appealing to the public to show their appreciation of the grand effort of Taupo's senior citizens by making voluntary donations towards our goal. "Any donation no matter how small will be gratefully
received and appreciated." In the last month the association has received $300 from the public towards its target and association members have raised more than $1000. Recently, the Taupo Borough Council leased the club a site adjacent to the public library for its proposed clubrooms. "It is considered an ideal site for the club amenities which have had- to be modified because of restrictions laid down by the
Lottery Board," said Mr Hasler. "However, the proposed plan will serve Taupo's needs for many years to come." He said 80 per cent of the association's members were over 70. "They realise they have limited time and are not the ones who will receive the most pleasure and benefit from the new clubrooms." On Friday, the association will hold a fair day at the Memorial Hall.
