Golfers provide fireworks
Higher handicapped players provided the "fireworks" in an A and B grade stableford competition on the Taupo Golf Club's old course on Saturday. Tirohanga farmer, J. Mather, went along quietly for nine holes and amassed 17 stableford points; then he stormed home in 38 for the back nine for 27 points and a total of 44. Despite his fine score he still had to survive a count-back for his success in the B grade as G. Thurston also finished with 44 points after halves of 20 and 24 points. Among the A graders L. O'Connor turned in the best card of 39 points. Professional competitions resulted: — Saturday Nassau stableford: First nine, J. Stevens 22, L. Draper 21; second nine, Mather 27, Thurston 24; overall, Mather 44, Thurston 44. Saturday Twos: Peter Watson, R. Bodle, B. Riley 6th, P. Coyle, M. Douglas, E. Poynter, S. Hughes, G. Thurston 16th. Sunday Stableford: C. Broughton 38, Mrs J. Prater 38, P. Thomas 37, Mrs W. Dolman 37. Sunday Twos: R. Weir 6th new course, C. Broughton 6th old course. I
