KURATAU MAY BECOME NEW RESORT

A Taupo man has presented plans to the Taumarunui County Council for the development of a parkland/reserve, holiday residentiai area at Kuratau. In a letter to the council from Rangatira Partners, Mr W. E. Hindmarsh said he hoped the plan would be adopted in principle. " "We have discovered an interesting piece of land at Kuratau and we wouid iike to develop it into a residentiai /reserve area devoted to hoiiday houses where people can 'get away from it all'," Mr Hindmarsh said yesterday.

"But this cannot be done without a cohesive plan from the local authofity. "We have to get some plan for a future sewerage scheme and we have asked the council to define its position on this matter." Mr Hindmarsh said he iwas disappointed about the "woefully misleading" pub-

licity already given the development plan. An article in the Taumarunui Gazette last week stated that the plan was designed to provide for an ultimate population of up to 5000. "The headline '5000 population plan proposed' does not do the article

justice," he said. "We are not suggesting that vast numbers of people will be encouraged to settle in the area — quite the contrary." Mr Hindmarsh declined to say how mnch the' proposed development would cost. The Taumarunui county clerk said yesterday the

council was not trying to foster wholesale development on the foreshore of Taumarunui' s section of Lake Taupo. "Only three areas have been earmarked for development on the western side of the lake which . is certainly less than those planned for the eastern side," he said.
