Total power cuts unlikely this week

Taupo was 3.8 per cent over its power allocation last week — but because of the mild weather and rain, total power cuts are unlikely to be imposed in Taupo this week. The assistant borough electrical engineer, Mr T. W. Orr, said that 10-hour cuts to water heating and night storage would have to continue. Earlier this week the M.E.D. warned that total cuts might have had to be made.

And Lake Taupo, after reaching 1172.90ft on June 4, has dropped 3.6 inches in the-last six days to 1172.60ft. "The level is falling just less than half an inch each day," said Mr W. J. Shanks, district manager, NZED, Hamilton. Since June 4 the output from Lake Taupo has been doubled, he said. "This is to save drawing from the South island lakes."
