Six motors stolen

from boats

The Taupo C.I.B. is concerned at the number of outboard motors being reported as stolen from boats moored overnight on the lake or parked on their trailers on streets. Six cases of thefts of this

type are currently under investigation by the C.I.B. Detective R. E Hawkins said that while it was not always suitable *to take boats out of the water and leave them safely secured overnight, boat owners who failed to do so were inviting the type of theft currently prevalent in Taupo. A recent attempt to take a 100 h.p. Mercury outboard motor from a boat moDred at

Two Mile Bay failed, a'lthough damage to the boat and motor in the attempt mounted to more than $100. A rowing boat was used by the offenders to reach the boat which they beached. The remote controls for the motor were cut, possibly with bolt cutters, but attempts to take the motor failed. The motor was valued at $1800.
