FARM HOUSES COVERED WITH LAYERS OF DUST; LOGGING TRUCKS BLAMED
Dry weather and miles and miles of mean a dust nuisance, particularly where speeds are higher.
Farm houses sited too close to roads used by logging trucks were, Cr R. B. Dick told the Taupo County Council this week, continually covered inside and out by layers of pumice dust.
Huge logging transporters travelled the roads in the early morning, raising clouds of dust. It infiltrated every nook and cranny and made life a misery for the home dwellers. He suggested a survey to discover how many homes are affected and how the problem can be alleviated. Cr Dick said different solutions had been tried but protective trees, for instance, were hard put to survive the effects of constantly circulated dust.
A fault was the siting of homes too close to the roads, but in most instances this had been done during development work. Cr P. B. Moorhouse said logging trucks were not the only offenders and that other vehicular traffic kicked up a lot of dust too. Council agreed to institute an investigation into the dust nuisance caused by logging trucks in country areas Federated Farmers and the National Roads Board will be consulted.
