NEW YEAR PRANK
A high-spirited, foolish New Year s Eve prank resulted in two Taupo youths appearing in the Taupo Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on charges of unlawfully interfering with a tractor in Tongariro Street, Taupo. Appearing before Mr M. C. Astley, S.M., were James Graham Sunnex, 19, driver operator, and Ross Wayne Whaanga, 18,painter. Both pleaded guilty. Sunnex was represented by Mr J. Witten-Hannah. Senior Sergeant R. Moncur said that at 12.30 a.m. on New Year's Day the two youths had been seen by a constable in Tongariro Street pushing a tractor. The tractor was one of two owned by a motor firm to advertise 24 hour petrol service. When they noticed that the constable had seen them they ran off Mr Astley told Sunnex the prank would not have been serious if it had been his first • offence. "But in the past two years you have accumulated quite a list. This is your sixth appearance since November' 1968," he said.
Sunnex was fined $50, court costs $5, and Whaanga, a first offender was fined $25 and ordered to pay $5 court costs.
