HAWKE CUP CHALLENGE
Bay of Plenty won the right to a direct challenge for the Hawke Cup next season by beating Thames Valley by 70 runs on the first innings in a representative cricket match at Tauranga at the weekend. Bay of Plenty batted first and scored 181 to which Thames Valley replied with 111. Bay declared its second innings closed at 213 for eight leaving the Valley 190 minutes in which to score 284 for victory. The target was never on and when stumps were drawn half an hour early Valley was 140 for five. Two Taupo players, W. Davey and B. McPherson, appeared in the Bay of Plenty line-up. McPherson opened the first innings and hit 16 before
falling lbw. He took a catch at slip in the pre-stumps session but spent the second day in the pavilion because of a hand injury suffered while batting. Davey reached double figures. with the bat in each innings, fielded well and bowled a couple of tidy overs on the first day. The game was notable for the performances of L. D. Anderson, the Bay all-rounder who scored 55 and 32 with the bat and took 5-20 and 2-28 with the ball. T. Matehaere was the most impressive Valley batsman and his two knocks of 47 and 44 demonstrated his considerable potential. Details: Bay of Plenty 181 (L. D. Anderson 55, W. Anderson 23, B.
