Ideas for preserving leaves
To preserve leaves for household ornamentation, the best method is the glycerinc treatment. Branchcs of leaves or separate leaves for small arrangements niay be used. Choosc material that is unblemished or, ii nccessary, remove impcrfcct leaves and trush apy thick stems. Losc as little time as possible between cutting and im mersing in a solution oi one-lhird glycerinc and two-thirds vvarm to hot water. The branches must stay in Ihe solution until all the glycerinc has been absorbed, and during this period, that may be several weeks, the cut portion of the branches must be kept covered by adding more water. Branches of copper beech are most irequently used, but other material may be used successfully, particularly leaves of a heavier substance such as miagnolia and ivy. It would be interesting for a lloral artist to expcriment with the different types of leaves she most favours for her work. After treatment, the leaves can be dried oi'f and stored, and they will stay soft and pliable, in some cases, for years.
