WEATHER SPOILED GOOD DAY OF CLUB CRICKET

The weather destroyed what promised to be an interesting day's cricket when the Taupo club competition resumed after the ChristmasNew Year recess last Saturday. Inclement conditions during the preceding week affected the preparation of the wickets, particularly the main square at the College. But despite the elements College maintained a scoring rate of almost five runs an over against Taupo, and College Old Boys took a run every two balls against competition leader Wanderers. College Old Boys are within 14 runs of picking up a batting bonus point and College wants 16 more for the same reason. But under the system of a maximum of 40 overs off which to compile 150 runs (for one point) and multiples of 25 for further points, College is better placed. The overnight total of 134 for three was compiled off 28 Taupo overs, while College Old Boys' 136 for six came from 33 overs. Best batting of the day was produced by College lefthander Fred Rewa, who, despite the assistance of the Taupo bowlers and fieldsmen,

struck hard and often to be 73 not out. Grant Halverson displayed considerable skill to survive the new ball and his tally of 21 out of 93 was a fine effort. Graeme Lindup coritinued the onslaught started by Rewa and together they had added 41 for the fourth wicket when the rain came. Taupo will certainly have to chase a sizeable total this weekend, but its batsmen, as they proved in the first round encounter, should be capable of carrying the day. But a first innings result is the only likely conclusion. The same can be said for

the other game. Wanderers need to dismiss the remaining College Old Boys batsmen quickly, and for few runs, to b^ certain of points. With Neville Cambie back in the side the Wanderers batsmen will have to fight for survival; but Cambie may be called on by Bay of Plenty Colts, which would supply Wanderers with a gift wicket and also deprive College Old Boys of its most incisive bowler. If that happens, and with bowling bonus points, Wanderers could increase its championship lead.
