HOW THEY PLAYED
FIRST NINE No. 1 — 195 yards, par 3 Lister won the toss for the honour and smacked a four iron to within 15 feet of the pin. No. 2 — 349 yards, par 4 Lister drove long and straight but Charles' ball struck a tree and rebounded into the fairway. His approach rolled off the green to the right and his chip was too strong. Lister, on in two, slotted his 20 footer for a birdie and Charles two putted to drop a shot. No. 3 — 334 yards, par 4 Lister smacked a three wood over the left side pine trees and finished within 40 yards of the green. Charles, much shorter and right, wedged to within two feet, Lister to three feet, and they sank their putts for birdies. No. 4 — 530 yards, par 5 Lister cut his drive into the rough and behind a huge tree. He chipped out after Charles, left and shorter, had played two to the mouth of the green. Lister's approach was too strong, so was his chip and he three putted from 25 feet for a two over seven. Charles putted in from 10 feet for a birdie. No. 5 — 370 yards, par 4 They were both on for two but missed similar length 15 foot putts for birdies and halved in par. Charles was left of the green, chipped short and missed a putt for par and dropped a shot. Lister put his third shot on the green from well out and salvaged a par with a good putt. No. 8 — 335 yards, par 4 Lister smacked a huge drive straight down the middle and Charles, though shorter, was also in good shape. Lister sank his putt from 15 feet. Charles, on the back apron of the green, chipped past
but made the return putt for a par four. No. 9 — 320 yards, par 4 Lister, blocked out by a tree left and short of the green, chipped short but had a tap in for his four. Charles, six feet from the pin for two, never looked like missing his birdie putt. Charles hit a brilliant wood shot to finish a chip away from the temporary green, chipped up and dropped his putt for another birdie. No. 13 — 335 yards, par 4 Charles made his third birdie in four holes while Lister, after striking a massive iron shot from the tee, failed to find the elevated green and had to be content with a par. No. 17 — 131 yards, par 3 Charles putted uphill fro'm about 20 feet for his birdie after Lister had made three. No. 18 — 510 yards, par 5 Charles was straight down the
middle. Lister's drive cut into the pines but rebounded into the fairway. He hit a long iron to the base of the green while Charles, with a wood, cut the corner too fine and still had a long way to go. He was off target and left himself with a difficult downhill five-footer for par after chipping short. Lister was up in three and down for par. Charles salvaged a par as his tenderly hit putt dropped in the side door. Charles: 244344325- 31 Lister: 345444335 - 35
