WATER SAFETY
"Water safety is'a yearround concern but figures show December and January to be the worst months, and it is imperative that nothing is left to chance at this time," said the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Seath. "The scope to enjoy water is now being extended beyond the traditional pursuits to bring added areas for caution. Private swimming pools and skin diving come into this category; both provide opportunities for pleasure and both require great care — as do all forms of aquatic activity. "While by taking to the water New Zealanders are only maintaining their image, there should be no reason for loss of life through drowning, yet drownings continue. "Parental supervision of children must again be emphasised to cover their every move," said Mr Seath. Older children should be advised to stay with a friend: "Look for your pal and make sure no harm comes to him . . ." If you are a skin diver, join a club.
