Four hurt in car accident

Four people, including the driver and a seven-month-old baby, were injured when the car in which they were travelling overturned about 1 8 miles east of Taupo on the Taupo-Napier highway about 5.30 p.m. on Monday. It is believed the car, driven by Mr Dennis Eian Ludlow 18, of Rotorua, was attempting to pass a car towing a boat on a trailer when the accident occurred. Taupo police are anxious to contact the driver of the car towing the boat. The injured passengers in Mr Ludlow's car were Mrs Amy Elizabeth Humphries, her son, Eugene Phillip Humphries, aged seven months, and Karen MacNamara. All were from Rotorua. The father of the injured child, Mr Bryan Maxwell Humphries also a passenger in the car, was not injured. Those hurt were taken to

Rotorua Hospital by ambulance. Hospital authorities yesterday said that the baby received a fractured skull and was being treated in the intensive care unit. His mother was also in the intensive care unit with abrasions and concussion. The driver, Mr Ludlow, had been admitted for observation for spinal injuries and Karen MacNamara was also admitted for observation with concussion. All were described as in a satisfactory condition.
