Population trebled by holiday influx

Hundreds of families, which have been pouring into Taupo during the past few days and taxing accommodation in the town and the surrounding district to its limits, have boosted Taupo 's daily population to more than 30,000 compared with the resident 10,000.

Although hundreds of extra beds have been provided this year in new motels there is plenty of room for more motel development, according to travel and tour agents in Taupo. Cabins and tent sites are again completely booked out and one caravan park proprietor has reported an even greater number of caravans this year. The Municipal Camp in Redoubt Street was extended this year and the new caravan sites provided have been eagerly snapped up. Hoteliers have also reported a good week, with only a few beds being available on occasional nights. Crowds of holidaymakers have been flocking to various beaches along the lakeshore\ while many others have made use of the two top-class warm pools — the A.C. Baths and De Bretts. Senior-Sergeant R Moncur described the large crowd s behayiour as "really excellent." "There has been no trouble at all and I hope that this will continue over the New Year period. "It's been really good," he said. At this stage a smaller holiday crowd than last year has arrived at Turangi, although numbers could pick up later in the holiday season. The Turangi police reported a quiet time with the behaviour of holidaymakers good and no incidents of disorderly behaviour.
