LEISURELY WALKS
Summer holiday programmes have again been organised in most New Zealand national parks. These will include walks and guided tours during the day and talks, films and slides in the evenings, all of which will be conducted by park rangers and naturalists. In the event of bad weather, alternative indoor daytime programmes will be arranged in most parks. "The enthusiastic visitor participation in previous years has fully established these programmes as a permanent feature of national park activities," said Mr R. J. MacLachlan, chairman of the National Parks Authority. "These programmes were initiated to enable all sections of the holidaying public to enjoy, not only the scenic beauty and grandeur of the parks, but also to gain some
understanding and appreciation of their ecology. This is particularly relevant with present concern for the environment." Walks would be conducted at a leisurely pace with plenty of time for discussion, so that participants need not worry about their ability to keep up with the party. Programmes" in the main commenced on December 27. "These nature programmes are arranged for the holiday season to enable as many people as possible to enjoy the benefits of the outdoor," said Mr MacLachlan, "but it is vital that everyone shows commonsense and consideration for others by keeping the parks free from litter. "Our national parks are an investment in the future and everyone has the responsibility of protecting this investment." Details of day-to-day activities are available from park visitor centres and park board secretaries.
