LIGHTS CAN BECOME HAZARDS
Christmas trees in hundreds of New Zealand homes are decorated with coloured lights which are potentially hazardous. Consumers' Institute has expressed very grave concern that imported brands in particular frequently do not comply with the electrical safety requirements of the official New Zealand stand- - ard. Though the institute knows of no deaths from this source, it is concerned that New Zealand should not have to wait for a tragedy until something is done to enforce the requirements of the Standard. The two main hazards are: — 1. With some brands, metallic tinsel from the tree could find its way into the bulb socket, presenting a serious shock hazard. 2. Some brands do not meet the standard "pull" test — so even a child clutching at a string of lights could pull it apart, exposing live wires. Consumers' Institute has been worried about this situation for a long time.
